Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid production. It is prescribed for conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, and to help prevent ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs. By lowering acid levels in the stomach, it relieves symptoms such as heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion, while promoting healing of the oesophagus and stomach lining.

Directions

  • Usual adult dose: 20–40 mg once daily, taken before a meal.
  • Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew.
  • Duration of treatment depends on the condition – often 2–8 weeks for reflux or ulcers.

Ingredients

  • Active ingredient: Pantoprazole sodium sesquihydrate equivalent to 20 mg or 40 mg Pantoprazole.
  • Excipients: May include mannitol, crospovidone, calcium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide, and iron oxides (varies by manufacturer).

Warnings

  • Do not take if allergic to pantoprazole or other PPIs (e.g., omeprazole, lansoprazole).
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver problems, osteoporosis, or low magnesium levels.
  • Long-term use may increase risk of bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and gut infections (C. difficile).
  • May interact with medicines such as warfarin, methotrexate, HIV medicines, and antifungals.
  • Not usually recommended in pregnancy unless clearly necessary.

Possible Side Effects

  • Common: Headache, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, gas.
  • Uncommon: Dizziness, rash, joint pain, insomnia.
  • Rare but serious: Severe allergic reaction, jaundice, severe diarrhoea, low magnesium (causing cramps/irregular heartbeat).
